Senate Finance Committee Investigating Finances of 'Name It and Claim It' Televangelists

The prosperity gospel has been popular recently with people donating large sums to those who preach its message.  Now, the Senate Finance Committee, under the direction of Chuck Grassley of Iowa, is investigating the financial practices of the leaders of six ministries, including Creflo Dollar, Randy and Paula White, Benny Hinn, Joyce Meyer, Eddie Long, and Kenneth Copeland.

The complaint from the committee is that the leaders of these ministries are abusing the tax-exempt status of the entities and misusing the funds donated for their private benefit, including multi-million dollar homes, private jets, fancy cars, etc.  Contrast these practices with those of Rick Warren, who practices "reverse tithing" (keeps 10% of income and gives 90%) and does not collect a salary from Saddleback Church.

There are several names for the teaching that God blesses the faithful with earthly blessings, including "name it and claim it", "prosperity gospel", and "word of faith".

In my opinion, the problem with the prosperity gospel is that it is focused on what God will do for us, instead of what is God's will for us.  Instead of asking how can I give to and serve others, it asks what's in it for me?  The only way that we can be sure of God's blessing (which may not be seen until Heaven) is to follow His agenda, instead of trying to advance our own.
