New Barbie Toy with Credit Card / GAME OF LIFE Twists and Turns Edition Now Takes Visa

In case you didn't know that credit card companies will go to any extreme to promote their product to get people hooked on overspending, one of the latest Barbie toys from Mattel is the "Fashion Fever Shopping Boutique" that includes a credit card.  Apparently the idea of buying things that you can afford with cash is out of date, and we need to teach this to our children at a young age.  Below is the product description found on Amazon.com.

"Amazon.com Product Description
One might think that with all the clothing already packing Barbie’s closet, she might not want for anything. But any girl with a fever for fashion knows that there is no such thing as too many shoes. Or too many accessories. Or too many cute tops. The Fashion Fever Shopping Boutique allows girls to get their shop on and experiment with wardrobe combinations without having to go through the trials of dressing and undressing Barbie in the process.

This playset’s ingenious centerpiece is a pole in three rotating parts, and with four sides. So on the top tier of the pole, you can hang things like hats, sunglasses, and jewelry on each of the four spots. The middle tier is perfect for tanks, blouses, dresses, or jackets while the bottom tier can hold pants, skirts, and belts. Now here’s the clever part. Once the pieces are hung, shoppers can rotate the individual tiers to see a multitude of style options. Love that scoop neck top, but just aren’t sure what bottom it goes with? Hang it on the boutique pole with a skirt, a pair of shorts, and a pair of pants and see for yourself which works.

The Shopping Boutique Playset comes with three outfits, including shoes and sunglasses, and the rotating pole can hold up to 20 clothing and accessory pieces. Also included is a display stand that doubles as the cashier counter where you "buy" your clothes. Swipe the Fashion Fever credit card to "pay" and find out the remaining balance on your account. But don’t fret. Once the balance hits zero, it will reset so you can continue to shop. Barbie dolls not included.

If this weren't enough, Hasbro has incorporated Visa cards into the classic game of LIFE.  In the press release a Visa spokesperson said " The latest enhancement is a powerful illustration of consumer preference to pay with Visa for everyday purchase and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. The game also highlights the importance of education and experiencing life to its fullest, which synch up nicely with the Visa brand."

Here is more from the press release...

When it launches this summer, Hasbro, Inc.'s (NYSE: HAS) new THE GAME OF LIFE: Twists & Turns Edition will be the first major board game in America to replace cash with a Visa-branded card as the preferred form of currency. Visa will also provide financial literacy enhancements within the game to teach children and consumers of all ages the benefits of proper money management.

"The flagship version of THE GAME OF LIFE has been updated many times since its launch in 1960 to ensure that it matches modern-day life," said Matt Collins, Vice President of Marketing. "When we started to design a completely new edition of the popular game, we knew it was also time to reflect the way people choose to pay and be paid - and replacing cash with Visa was an obvious choice.

Clearly, these are blatant attempts to get children accustomed to the use of credit cards, so they will grow up and use them as adults.  We as parents need to fight back and educate our children about responsible money management.  We can also refuse to buy these toys and any other toys that have sold out to the credit card companies.
